The Football Association has dispatched operational staff to the US this week to look at potential facilities for the forthcoming global finals, amidst increasing worries that their preferred site could be taken by the Netherlands.
Manager Thomas Tuchel had previously cleared an FA proposal for England to be based in Kansas after a warm-up training camp in Fort Lauderdale. But, following the recent group stage draw, there are now fears that the Netherlands, who play their group games in Kansas, will be given first refusal on the chosen facility at Sporting Kansas City—a high-performance centre operated by US Soccer.
FIFA allocates training camps according to geographic location and FIFA rankings if there is a dispute, with the draw potentially pitting the FA against the Netherlands and Argentina for bases in the tournament's south-central region.
Given England's group stage matches scheduled to take place in Dallas, Boston, and New Jersey, the FA is now understood to be looking at alternative locations on the east coast. The association began its scouting process for training camps at the start of the year, with Tuchel and director of football John McDermott visiting possible locations during the Club World Cup last summer.
In spite of this advanced preparation, there was always an acceptance that the official tournament draw could drastically change their plans.
England face the eighth most demanding group stage draw in terms of mileage. Topping Group L would set England on course for a last-32 game in Atlanta, followed by potential round of 16 tie in Mexico City.
After the base camp is confirmed, the FA will turn its attention to arranging two pre-tournament matches in Florida at the start of June.
