A massive bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a historic bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the new year.
The successful offer for the 243-kilogram fish came from the operator of a popular sushi restaurant group, which manages outlets across the country and overseas.
"The year's tuna heralds good luck," stated the business owner, a familiar bidder at the traditional new year's auction.
Known as the Tuna King, this industry figure is noted for making high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.
After the auction, the successful bidder admitted to reporters that he was "taken aback at the amount," noting, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."
This new purchase surpasses his previous record purchases:
Despite once saying that he thought he "overdid it," he has now gone on to shatter his personal record another time.
The inaugural auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally known for exorbitant prices. Last year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a separate sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be featured at its restaurants throughout the country.
The intense activity at the fish market during these early morning auctions has become a major tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
The multi-million-dollar tuna was quickly processed for customers at the entrepreneur's sushi chains soon after the auction ended.
"I believe like I've commenced the year in a good way after consuming something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," remarked one satisfied customer.
