Guten tag, football enthusiasts. Wie gehts? Alles klar I hope on this fine early start to the tenth week coming straight outta Germany. The Olympiastadion in Berlin to be precise where at 9:30 AM EST and 2:30 PM GMT the powerful Indianapolis Colts (7-2) take on the Falcons (3-5). The fifth game played on soil in Germany and the initial in the capital city.
As sparkly jackets go that is an real standout from the Olympic figure skater on the opening flip. A minor slip from Sky Sports there as we hear “which team got the coin flip?” from the presenter with an accidentally live microphone.
Well, the Colts have won the toss and have chosen to get the ball first. The Colts' offense will be setting up shortly. Can the quarterback recover after a rough one in their last game?
Not to be outdone the vocalist performing the US national anthem has some of the largest shoulder pads you are ever likely to see. The fashion picks are impressive today. We are almost underway after a choral number for the German anthem. Elegant.
Scoreless at 13:30 in the first
And we're off! And we have early drama after the Colts running back catches a screen pass, sweeps out for 15 yards to the right then loses the ball … only for his center to recover the fumble with the recovery. Colts are in Falcons territory already.
Colts 0-0 Falcons 10:51, 1st quarter
And the drama keeps coming as the Colts go for it on 4th down. The gamble fails to pay off as Josh Downs cannot reel in a quick pass from the quarterback. Prior to the failed attempt the Falcons defender put a huge hit on tight end Mo Alie-Cox. Atlanta's defense started strong as they attempt to end their string of three losses. Next up Sauce Garner’s debut!
First score: Colts lead 6-0 at 8:36
Was that a missed touchdown by Kyle Pitts? The Falcons player makes a crucial error, he was very open but the ball just slips through his grasp. That play rather sums up the first round pick’s career to date.
So far, so disappointing but it only gets worse for the Atlanta as they turn over possession to the Colts on the 23-yard line. Michael Penix Jr is sacked and can’t keep hold of the ball.
A nifty 22-yard run from Ashton Dulin sets Jonathan Taylor up to easily run for a touchdown on the next snap. Kicker Michael Badgley skews the extra point wide. Mistake.
Falcons respond: 6-7 at 6:07
The quarterback recovers from the turnover by marching his Falcons down the field for a score of their own. Drake London makes some chunky receptions to put them in the scoring area then the defense opens up for Tyler Allgeier to run untouched into the end zone through the heart of the field for a 13-yard gain. The running back finishes it off for a one-yard touchdown of his own. Advantage Atlanta.
And for afters, the full slate starting at 12pm CST/1pm EST/6pm GMT (with home teams first) is as follows:
(5-4) Panthers v Saints (1-8)
(5-3) Chicago Bears v New York Giants (2-7)
(3-5) Houston Texans v Jacksonville Jaguars (5-3)
(2-7) Miami Dolphins v Buffalo Bills (6-2)
(4-4) Vikings v Ravens (3-5)
(1-7) New York Jets v Browns (2-6)
(6-2) Tampa Bay Buccaneers v New England Patriots (7-2)
What a feast. My pick for the best game is the Vikings and Ravens playing out the game of the day.
