Trans director Sam Feder's newest documentary "Increased Examination" offers a moving dual perspective – simultaneously an intimate portrait of a leading trans activist and a sharp examination of journalistic coverage about trans issues.
This documentary documents ACLU attorney Chase Strangio as he gears up for oral arguments in the landmark Supreme Court case US v Skirmetti. This legal battle occurred in late 2024, with the judiciary ultimately ruling in support of the state's argument, essentially permitting limitations on healthcare for transgender youth to remain in effect across numerous US states.
We made Heightened Scrutiny in merely 16 months, stated Feder during a discussion. By contrast, my previous film Disclosure took me half a decade, so this was quite rushed. Our intention was to stimulate dialogue so people would understand more about the case.
While Feder offers a comprehensive analysis of how prominent publications have disseminated transphobic rhetoric, the film's greatest contribution may be its compelling portrayal of Strangio. Usually a reserved lawyer in media appearances, Strangio displays his humanity throughout the film.
This represented a significant challenge, to open up aspects of my life to a camera lens that I had worked hard to keep confidential, stated Strangio. Feder explained he wanted the next generation to know that we tried, to see what was done in support of these fights for our basic existence.
To strengthen Strangio's account, Feder features multiple trans voices, such as well-known figures from journalism and entertainment. This film also includes viewpoints from non-trans supporters who examine how mainstream media outlets have contributed to harmful coverage of transgender people.
The experience of trans youth central to the legal case is represented through a impressive 12-year-old student named Mila. Audiences first see her advocating for her peers at a educational meeting, with subsequent scenes showing her speaking for transgender rights outside the Supreme Court.
The documentary also contains emotional moments where Feder transcends the never-ending political struggle, including footage of Strangio traveling in Italy and receiving a tattoo featuring verses from activist Pauli Murray's poem "Prophecy."
This ink moment is one of my most cherished sections in the movie, explained Strangio. Being tattooed is nearly like a reflective process for me, to be completely aware in my body and to think of it as a vessel for things that are significant to me.
Feder's dedication to carefully documenting Strangio adding to his body art underscores that this film is essentially about transgender bodies – not just those of young people who face prohibition of their ability to live authentically in their own bodies, but also the bodies of the numerous participants who appear in the production.
I produce films with a message, and part of that is picking people who are brilliant and eloquent enough to carry the camera, shared Feder. Whenever people ask me what they should wear for an interview, my reply is whatever makes you feel attractive. That is important to me – as trans people, we struggle so much with our appearance.Impact and Optimism
One aspect that causes Feder's documentaries excel is his evident ability for making his transgender participants feel respected, seen and appreciated. This technique creates genuine rapport between Feder and Strangio, helping the director to achieve his goal of portraying Strangio as a whole individual and leaving a record for future generations of how determinedly he and fellow activists have struggled for transgender rights.
I don't want people to find themselves in a state of incessant hopelessness because of what the law is failing to provide us, shared Strangio. I strive to be in a process of using the law to lessen harm, but not to turn it into some type of channel for our freedom possibilities. Official institutions is not going to be the reflection through which we view ourselves. We are that reflection, and it's very important that we continue having that conversation together with conversations about resisting these policies and practices.Heightened Scrutiny is presently accessible for online viewing during Trans Awareness Week and will receive a wider distribution at a subsequent date.
