Ex- FBI director James the former director has entered an innocent plea to giving untrue testimony to lawmakers and impeding a congressional proceeding.

The former director's legal representative filed the response acting as his counsel in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would attempt to have the proceedings dismissed for several factors including that his defendant, a detractor of former President Trump, was being targeted.

The former director was formally accused just days after the former president pushed his top legal official to move forward against him.

Judicial Process

In court on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald told the court they intended to submit several petitions to throw out the proceedings before a legal hearing, arguing the government's case was retaliatory and that a federal prosecutor was improperly designated to take over the proceedings.

The former director's case was originally handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under pressure from Donald Trump after his investigation into an additional opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to file indictments.

Courtroom Atmosphere

The former director came across in positive mood as he came into the legal venue on Wednesday, speaking with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was joined by his partner, Patrice Failor and child his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the former government recently fired.

Upon hearing to the magistrate read his rights and the dual charges against him in court on Wednesday, the defendant was asked if he comprehended the allegations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you very much," he informed the proceedings.

Previous Events

The former director was the head of the FBI from 2013-2017 and was dismissed about several months into Donald Trump's first administration as president. At the time, he was overseeing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and the presidential campaign.

During his tenure, Mr Comey sparked a negative reaction from Democrats when he declared just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was examining political contender Clinton's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against Clinton were never brought, resulting in disapproval from the Republican party as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Prosecutors assert Mr Comey lied to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They say he misled the legislative body by claiming he had not approved someone at the agency to release to news outlets information about the FBI investigations.

Prosecutors also charge Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, hinder and slow" the legislative group by giving misleading testimony to it.

Public Statements

In a video James Comey posted to his online platform after he was charged, he said he was wrongly accused and alleged Trump of conducting himself like a "autocrat".

"We have understood for a long time that there are ramifications to challenging Mr Trump," he stated. "We choose not to live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he added. "So let's have a legal proceeding."

These allegations against Mr Comey came after Donald Trump published on digital channels demanding his top legal official, the attorney general, prosecute Mr Comey and others.
