Courageous Rail Employee Endures Severe Injuries Amid Mass Knife Incident on Express Service

A courageous railway staff member who intervened to protect passengers during a mass knife incident on a express train has suffered life-threatening wounds, police confirmed on Sunday.

Particulars of the Terrifying Incident

Surveillance video allegedly shows the employee trying to halt the attacker as the train traveled between a city and Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire. Witnesses recounted a frightening 14-minute period after the train departed Peterborough, with injured passengers fleeing through compartments.

The suspect, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, remains in detention for questioning. Police announced a significant incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.

Emergency Reaction and Aftermath

The event on Saturday night resulted in 11 people being cared for in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Five people have now been discharged from hospital.

A bystander recorded the individual waving a big knife and being subdued with a Taser as he faced officers on the station. He was reportedly heard yelling, "End my life, end my life."

“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. We are thinking of the victims and their families – especially the brave employee of rail staff whose relatives are being supported by trained personnel,” stated a high-ranking law enforcement official.

Union Response and Appeals for Action

Rail associations were swift to praise employees and call for more action. A union leader said he would be “requesting urgent meetings with authorities, rail employers and police to ensure that we have the strongest possible support, tools and effective procedures in place”.

A different association leader urged the rail company and government “to act swiftly to review security, to support the affected employees, and to make sure that no incident like this occurs again”.

Operator Praised for Quick Action

The operator who stopped the service at Huntingdon was reported as being “deeply affected” but “well”, and has been praised by association officials for doing “exactly the right thing”.

“He did not stop the train in the center of two stations where it’s obviously challenging for the first responders to reach, but he continued traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the assistance was pretty much waiting,” explained a association representative.

Further Information

Police stated they received the initial emergency calls at 7:39 pm, and the train was forced to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

One observer recounted at first wondering if the situation was a Halloween prank, but quickly realized from people's faces that it was serious.

Police have confirmed there is nothing to suggest the event was a terrorist incident and have requested the community to come forward with any additional details.

Rail operations on the affected route are anticipated to have disruption until the following day, with travelers recommended to postpone their travel where possible.
