British Broadens Methanol Toxicity Warning Roster with 11 Nations

Industrial alcohol caution sign

The UK government has placed an additional eleven more countries to its travel warning roster about the dangers of industrial alcohol poisoning from contaminated beverages.

The expanded advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a global increase in the incidence of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol contamination.

Only a few weeks ago, authorities had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, after a number of high-profile cases such as the deadly death of six visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that even small amounts of toxic alcohol can result in vision loss or death within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Used?

Industrial alcohol is a harmful industrial alcohol typically employed in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. It is not designed for human consumption.

While it is inherently formed during the production of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers reduce it to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the refining procedure.

But in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to reduce expenses, and because it is flavorless and scentless, it is extremely challenging to notice.

Authorities' Guidance for Travellers

Authorities minister a senior official emphasized that all travellers should be aware of the symptoms of toxic alcohol contamination.

"When you are drinking spirits in foreign countries, stick to well-known venues and avoid homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," the official advised.

"If something feels off, like a hangover that's much more severe than usual or vision problems – contact a doctor immediately."

The full list of nations noted as carrying a threat of industrial alcohol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
