A minimum of 64 individuals died in a law enforcement action against the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's history.

Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives reported. Over 80 people were arrested.

Intense confrontations broke out when approximately 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho reacted using shooting, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities said.

The UN Human Rights Office said it was "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".

Mission Consequences

The informal settlements close to Rio's airport is considered to be the headquarters of a major illegal networks.

Local authorities confirmed no less than 50 of the fatalities were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Many residents were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Local Reaction

Community members have described the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 people - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.

Roads remain closed throughout the region.

Criminal Expansion

The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and dominance over the slum communities.

Security forces stated over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were captured in the mission, in addition to multiple guns.

Operation Background

The combined action by different law enforcement agencies follows a twelve-month inquiry.

Many of the individuals are thought to be participants in an organization from the northern region who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.

Broader Context

Large-scale police operations are regular in the country prior to major international events in the country.

The UN climate summit the climate conference is set to occur in the northern city of Belem in November.
