Cliff Scaling in the Peak District

Including complete beginners will rapidly be ascending sheltered Peak District outcrops on this two-day course. Participants will become proficient in tying in, belaying and several climbing techniques, along with descending. This program is open to anyone aged 13 and over, from first-time climbers to those with limited indoor experience. Abstract Painting in Spain

This historic hillside village, a ancient hillside village in southern Spain, around 45 minutes’ drive from Granada, is the inspiring backdrop for this creative getaway. Participants of all abilities – even beginners – will be taught how to conceive and execute modern art. A portion of the time will be spent outside, working on guided exercises out in nature. These initial sketches and watercolour studies will then be expanded upon in the workspace, with participants producing a number of abstract landscapes in acrylic paint to be exhibited in the local community. The group has exclusive access of the hotel, which is centered on an central patio and has a rooftop with panoramic vistas over the hills. The fee encompasses five days of painting tuition; full board; and an outing to the nearby fortress and other points of interest.

Ottolenghi-Inspired Cooking in Portugal

This Mediterranean foodie getaway, set on a villa by the river in the inland Algarve, is inspired by the plant-based cuisine of celebrated cooks. Participants will learn to produce selection of small dishes, attend a hands-on falafel session, perfect mid-morning meals such as shakshuka, and make substantial main courses such as spicy mushroom ragu and moussaka. There are visits to the local market and a nearby winery to taste Portuguese wines, combined with free time for walks by the Funcho River, to relax on the terrace or swim in the pool. The accommodation, a former farmhouse, has multiple rooms, plus safari tents in the gardens.

Street Dance in Buckinghamshire

This energetic camp is an energizing, inclusive weekend dance intensive for adults in High Wycombe. The format throughout the camp is a party-style group warmup, then three hour-and-a-half workshops teaching different street dance styles, then an 60-minute jam to demonstrate those solos. Participants are split into levels according to skill level, so it is suitable for those who are completely new to popping and locking, all the way to advanced dancers or teachers. This event doesn’t include lodging but there are several hostels and hotels nearby, and it is 23-35 minutes by train into London.

Sea Shanty Break in Cornwall

This coastal town is the perfect setting for a sea shanty weekend. Guests will learn traditional shanties from a experienced musician, and have a go at writing their own. The schedule includes vocal warmups, breath control techniques, performance tips and a closing performance. The holiday is based at a country house with views of the bay. All meals are provided, including a Cornish cream tea on arrival, breakfast options, lunches to go and evening meals. Traditional rum, alas, is not provided. Everyone join in: “What will we do with the tipsy mariner …?”

Writing in Greece

Writer and lecturer Greg Mosse runs the regular sessions on this writing retreat. He covers topics including story structure, characters, setting and suspense, to submitting work to agents. Greg’s wife, the well-known writer Kate Mosse, will participate in events at the beginning and end of the week. The retreat is held at a traditional complex in Vamos at the foot of the Lefka Ori – ten private accommodations surround a central garden with a pool (companions are encouraged to come along). On the final evening, aspiring writers celebrate with a musical performance in the garden and a final meal.

Introduction to Apiculture in Wales

A leading eco-centre near Machynlleth runs a wide range of programs covering eco-living: from wildlife gardening to upcycling. This weekend course will help attendees get to grips with the fundamentals of apiary management, explore the life cycle of honeybees and discover their environmental benefits. It is designed to produce “ecologically mindful beekeepers”.
